Helen Keller Park is a 6.6-acre facility located on the corner of Vermont Avenue and El Segundo Boulevard in South Los Angeles. The facility consists of a small community room with a kitchen, and lighted basketball courts and a lighted baseball diamond. The park is named after Helen Keller, known as “the first lady of courage”, who was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama on June 27, 1880. At the age of 19 months, she lost her sight and hearing as a result of meningitis. Her pilgrimage from Tuscumbia to worldwide recognition is an inspiring story which took her from silence and darkness to a life of vision and advocacy. Against overwhelming odds, she waged a seemingly impossible battle to re-enter the world she had lost.
