The Santa Catalina Island Conservancy Nature Center is nestled in a large canyon at an elevation of five hundred feet. The center features recordings of whales, dolphins and sea lions. Visitors can learn about kelp forests and ocean currents. Docent tours and picnic areas are provided. School and group tours are by reservation only. Hiking permits and maps are also available. The 1,200 square foot Nature Center at Avalon Canyon is operated by the Catalina Island Conservancy, whose Education department offices are located in the building. The museum-quality displays feature a theme of PURE (Protect, Understand, Renew, Explore) Catalina. Interactive displays offer information regarding the Catalina Island Conservancy’s mission, goals and projects. Also available is a series of video presentations, including the Bald Eagle restoration project, Bison repatriation and a feel-good Conservancy-themed video.

Visitors to the Nature Center can also learn about: Catalina endemics (plants and animals that live on Catalina Island and nowhere else in the world); the plight and resurgence of the Catalina Island Fox; the dangers of introduced invasive species; and, other important work being done by Conservancy employees as the stewards of 88% of Catalina Island’s beautiful lands.

The Nature Center at Avalon Canyon features museum-quality, interactive displays, a three-dimensional topographic map of Catalina, several video presentations and hands-on “Explore-A-Drawers” with samples and artifacts.
