El Cariso Park stands as a memorial to the young men who lost their lives on the Loop Fire, November 1, 1966, to those who survived and to firefighters everywhere. The El Cariso Hot Shots, a USDA-Forest Service Wildland Firefighting Crew, was constructing a fire line downhill into a chimney canyon. They were 200 feet from completing their assignment when a shift of winds caused the spot fire directly below them to race up the canyon and trap them in the flames. Ten members of the elite firefighting crew perished on the Loop Fire that day.
Today, this beautiful 79-acre park is a focal point for the surrounding communities, providing amenities from picnic areas, play areas and tennis courts to a beautiful community swimming pool.
