The original 1.47 acres of the park property were purchased on March 8, 1938, from Cedars of Lebanon Hospital. Two months later, it was officially designated as “East Los Angeles Playground.” On June 25, 1940, it became “Laguna Park and Playground,” a name it retained for more than 30 years. On September 17, 1970, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors renamed the park to “Ruben F. Salazar Memorial County Park.” This action was in tribute to the memory of Ruben F. Salazar, a well-known columnist for the Los Angeles Times and an executive at television station KMEX. Today, Ruben F. Salazar Park is an 8.4 acre park.
